Moody Monday Teen tip: Prayer

During my teen years I began to spread my wings.
Teens today haven't changed that much.
Well my wings were being spread, I ended up flying into some trouble.
(I know it's hard to believe:)
The teens I am raising are too, spreading their wings and swooping around trying to figure out who they are and where they fit in this world.  In the middle of it all, they have to found trouble and I am sure they may find it again.  One thing that we have going for us is that, the Almighty, can see in the places us parents can't.
My teen tip for today is to cover them in prayer.  They are on a battle field daily.
I had a dear friend share with me something that her teen had done and she is terribly heartbroken over.  As she shared with me it reminded me of a prayer I had not prayed in awhile.
Lord, I pray if they are being drawn to trouble or are in trouble, that they would get CAUGHT!
My kids use to complain, "Don't pray for that.  It's not very nice or fair."
I would just laugh, and say, "Well, if you are walking upright, then you don't have a thing to worry about."
As, I listened to my friend and felt ache with her over this matter, I said, "At least it has come to light.  Now we can deal with it."  If it would have stayed hidden, then we would have went on with life as if everything was just swell.  Now that it is out we can begin dealing with the consequences from it.  Better to do that under the care of loving parents.  They are still in training. When they are little and do something wrong we just deal with it, but it seems, as teens, we think more about what we must have done wrong in our previous parenting, as if we are all finished.  Here is some news, just because they get/got into trouble, it doesn't mean were terrible parents, its just more opportunity to train them.   If we get to caught up on what we have or haven't done then we may miss out on the bigger picture. These are the times where we get the opportunity to talk about mercy and grace that we have been given in Christ.  These are the times when the consequences are a bit bigger then when they were small, but not quite what they will be as adults.  They may not need us as they use to when they were small, but they still do need us.  They need our coaching and guidance.  We forget sometimes that this is still our job, because they are beginning to act like grown-ups and look like them to.  We are still the parents and our jobs aren't finished yet.
Prayer, what a gift.  Cover your teens in it!
Praying they'll get caught,
Connie

Favorite Find Friday......

I am so thrilled about today's post I could hardly wait.  This past weekend my hubby and I did some thrifting.  Normally, I don't weed through the clothes only because for him it can be quite boring and I really enjoy spending time with him so I didn't want to ruin it.  But as we browsed I stumbled on 3 items that kind of just stuck out and he liked them, so I tried them on and then hemmed and hawed over spending $12 on these sweet pieces.  (Cheap skate, I know)  Anyways, that was until I saw a sign that said 50% off entire store.  WHAT, 50%!!!  Could it be?   Yes it was true.  So now my hubby was off to his section to see if he could find a few things for himself.  I'm sure you can guess what I started to do......shop, shop, shop.  It was a grand day and can't wait any longer to share my favorite find for this week and the fab. prices I paid.
Markon boots (never heard of the brand myself, but love the style)
$5.99 on sale for $3!
Ann Taylor Loft orange sweater
$3.99 on sale for $2!
Banana Republic white tailored button top
$3 on sale for $1.50!
The belt is old and the jeans I got for Christmas.
Kohls on sale for $19.99. (not a great deal, but jeans can be tricky for me)
That is a grand total of....$26.50 for a new outfit.
Here I am, pleased with my bargains.
Not only am I excited for me, but the little money I spent that day goes to a good cause!
Thank you, Bethesda Thrift store in Appleton and Five Days...Five Ways blog for the inspiration.

Thoughtful Thursday

This is a photo I caught of my beautiful cousin and her new husband.  I just love it and the computer doesn't do it justice compared to when I had it printed.  I don't even think they know I took it.  I love to think that in the midst of the hoop-la of the day they were able to have a brief intimate exchange between just the two of them.  Their wedding was the best wedding I have ever been to.  Makes me want to have a do over.  My uncle, her dad, performed the ceremony and it was the most honest and encouraging one I have ever heard.  They both went into marriage with eyes wide open.  This was so opposite from my very own wedding ceremony. On the day I took my vows to be Troy's bride, I did not realize what I was signing up for.  Good thing, because it is a big responsibility to be a wife and I may have gotten cold feet.
It's no wonder why some do.
I entered into this covenant very naive, but I am so thankful to be learning as I go.
I am in the middle of a Bible Study right now that is on marriage.  The title is "Women Making a Difference in Marriage".  I have done many marriage studies, so I am pretty familiar with the usual material.  Today, I am pondering something that I read a few weeks ago, that has left an impact.  She wrote, as the wife, it is my responsibility to guard my husband heart and to manage my home.  Hmmmm.....I know about managing my home, but hadn't given much thought to the guarding my husbands heart.  What does that look like?  After all, he is a man, doesn't he know enough to look after his own heart?
My thoughtful conclusion.
It is my responsibility to build him up and not tear him down with my words.  I am to be his helper, not his boss or his mother for that matter.  I am to intercept the ads that come in the mail that may be trying to seduce him in to lust and an unrealistic impression of beauty.  When were out, I am the one to help when women dress to draw his eye.  I am his sounding board when he finds himself in a dilemma.  When I am speaking of him to others, my words are to be honoring.
Guard his heart, guard his heart.  It's my job as a wife.
If you were to ask me 2 days ago, "How are you doing in the area of managing your home?"  My response would have been......"Pretty well, thank you for asking."  But after further thought, I'm not so sure I am doing that swell.  For years, I have been barking out, "Let's get rid of that silly TV."  Mind you, I just mean in the sense of watching shows, not the actual TV itself.  I have never discuss this in a way that would be open for discussion, more like, just do what I say, type attitude.  Needless to say, this has not worked out very well.  After reading my study and watching "our" shows this past evening, I have realized that I need to present this in a way that is respectful and in a way that will be received well, for the very sake of protecting not only my husbands heart, but my precious children and even my own.
If I am to take my responsibilities seriously, that means I need to act in a manner that is receivable.  I may be right in my efforts, but if I acting like a drill sergeant, it is likely I will be repelling the very people I am responsible for.  Guard his heart and manage your home, guard his heart and manage your home.
It's my job.
I asked the question, "What does that look like?"  It looks like it begins with my own attitude.

"You were taught with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by it's deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness."
Ephesians 4:22-24

Word-filled Wednesday

"Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there were none of them."
Psalm 139:16

What I would have said.
She was a woman who was fearfully and wonderfully made.  Her Creator knew every hair on her head.
He has loved her with a love that goes beyond all measures.
He had a plan for her life and so many times when we face loss of someone young, we struggle to understand all the, "whys".  I don't have all the answers, but I do know that as we wrestle to understand and make our way through this life, the same Creator that had a plan for her has one for us.  We are put together by no mistake.  We are divinely set in families and friend relationships with great care.  Becki's life has left fingerprints all over each of our lives.
It's likely we will continue to wrestle with the whys, but I know that with each turn of restlessness and each tear that falls we can trust the one who sees it all.

"When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.  The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." Psalm 34:16-17

"You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle.  Are they not in your book?"
Psalm 56:8

Moody Monday: Teen Tip

Yes, that is me with my 2 teens and pre-teen.  And yes, we are all smiling!
A friend and I were talking, "blog talk" and I was sharing how I wish this technology
was around when I was parenting my babies and toddlers.  I went on to say how darling
some of the blogs are that I go to and I think it is because their kiddos are so darn cute.
She encouraged me that I should share about being a mom to teens.  So that is
how I arrived at Moody Mondays!  My goal is to share one simple tip weekly
on what we have done or do, to encourage, enjoy, and train our teens.

Today's tip:  A lot of the work is done when they are young.  Troy and I had a plan.
We set a vision for what kind of people we wanted our kids to be and tried to be
creative in the things we did to get them there.  (I am talking about character, not personality.  We love the people they are.)  Example:  We always expected 1st time obedience.
When they didn't obey us the 1st time, there were consequences.  We tried to be very consistent in this area and when we weren't we would apologize to them and start over making clear our expectations of them.  I know some would say that, that is not realistic to expect them to obey the very 1st time and for a time they did really struggle with it, but learned quickly.
In the midst of the consequences we would always remind them that we loved them and
that we were doing this for their good.  We told them that we are the parents God has given them and
that they can trust us even though they may not like the consequences they were receiving.  Then
if they would give us some push back we would ask them, "You know we love you right?", "You know we
always do what we think is best for you, right?", and "You know that you can trust us, right?".  And we would hash through it with them until they would soften towards us in the midst of discipline.
Guess what.  They still believe that about us today, in the middle of their teen years.
We have not always done things right, but in this area, I am thankful for the endurance of those early
years of training, because we are reaping some of that fruit now, by God's grace.
That's the tip.
Train them while they are young about your great love for them in the middle of discipline.

Word-filled Wednesday

"He disarmed the rulers and authorities and
put them to open shame by triumphing over them in Him."
Colossians 2:13-15

This was the work on a building we saw in Brussels, Belgium.
We stood in the middle of the city center and it was overwhelming
how small I felt.  I thought this verse fit appropriately and
today I am needing this reminder.

Word Filled Wednesday

"Love is patient, Love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast,
it is not proud.  It is not rude,
it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered,
it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but,
rejoices with truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes,
always preservers."
1 Corinthians 13:4-7

I was reading in my study this week that, the word patient,
can actually translate to mean a great suffering, or enduring suffering.
That is exactly what being patient is for me most of the time; suffering.
Might I remember that the next time I have to,
wait for someone I love, love is patient
travel behind a slow driver, love is patient,
wait for a treadmill to open love is patient,
listen to teens argue, love is patient,
submit to my husbands leading, love is patient.
Being patient is showing love, and the suffering I am enduring is
making me look more like Christ himself.  Simply said,
"True Love is a servant, who thinks of others and their needs before their own."

Happy Valentines Day

There is no one else in the whole wide world that I would rather call my Valentine!
That's right, you can line up all the men in the whole world and I would still chose him.
I love to be the one who is called Mrs. Troy Hoehne.  I love that no one else gets that title.
This man of mine, makes me laugh and smile like no other.
He brings out the very best in me. (and the worst at times:)
I love him so much that sometimes it feels as if my heart will burst.
I cherish and adore him.  I long to grow old with him.
He protects and provides for me.  He is upright and righteous.  He is a man of character and strength.
He is fearfully and wonderfully made and his "manscape" is like no other!
My heart still gets butterflies when our eyes meet from across the room.
Best of all, I love us together.

I hope you all have a wonderful Valentines day with the one who holds the key to your heart.
If you have any creative ideas how to make your beloved feel loved and special, be sure to leave me a comment.  I always love to hear from you!

Word Filled Wednesday

"Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him.
Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth.
Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them."
Psalm 127:3-5

As I sought out a photo to use today, I am overwhelmed by the blessing to be a mother.
No longer do my kiddos look so small, but oh how I remember, as if it were yesterday.
I tend to romanticize those tough years, but I wouldn't trade a minute of them.
They have truly been our reward and will be our legacy and I couldn't be more proud.

Dreamer, Nothing but a dreamer......

Funny thing.  When I was young, I would hear, "Follow your Dreams".  As you age, you don't hear it as much or maybe you just quit paying attention to it, realizing they may never happen so why dwell on it.  For me, I'm not sure I really had dreams, well, at least not big ones.  Of course, I dream't of marriage and kids, but I guess, I am talking about the dreams that are along the lines of.....what do you want to be when you grow up, type dreams.  I have always been a very down to earth, practical person.  My dream was to find a good job that I could give my best and enjoy.  To date: being a wife and mom have been the best job I could have ever dreamed of.  (funny, but way back when that wasn't really on my mind)  It is not over yet, but as I prepare my 1st child to think about college, it is a bit of an awakening that this job I hold now will come to a close if I do it right.  With all that being said, the Lord has given me some freedom and encouragement to dream of what is to possibly come.  He has given me some dreams.  I hesitate to even type them out, because the practical side of me, says, "Bah, you could never do that." and the fear that if I tried I may fail.  Here is the list.  I have a heart to teach and share the Lord with people, mainly, women and young people.  I enjoy public speaking, as crazy as that sounds.  Possibly write a book.  Health and Wellness has a special spot to.  I toy around with the idea of opening a business that specializes in products for runners.  The Lord and I are in more of a brainstorming session now and I will wait and see where He leads me.  He has been using Joel 2 to be a blessing and encouragement to me.  I write only to wonder what is to come and also to be able to one day look back and either laugh or see if any of it comes to be.  Do you have any dreams that you hope to one day fulfill or are you living them out?  Let me know, I'd love to hear them.  Happy Dreaming.............

"your old men (women) shall dream dreams,....." Joel 2:28

Acts 9:6

"The Lord said to him in a vision, "Ananias."
And he said, "Here I am, Lord."
And the Lord said to him, "Go......"
Acts 9:14-15

Lord, you have plans that are being unfolded.
Your plans are always good.
You chose the least of these to carry them out.
"Here I am, Lord.  I will go."
Might I be like a sheep who knows her shepherds voice.
"Rise and you will be told what to do."
(paraphrased Acts 9:6)

Romancing your Husband.......

                     Romantic Ideas for Your Husband

Romance according to Webster:  A long poem or tale, originally written in a romance dialect, about the adventures of knights. 2.  Novel of love, adventure, 3. Excitement, love 4. A love affair.

Is this how you would define your marriage?  Or is it more like the trailer from the movie "Date Night"? (1st 30 seconds)
We love this movie, because after awhile that is what romance begins to look like and we need to refresh and reignite the spark that we once had!

Point #1.     Practice NOT doing the things he doesn’t like.
Normally flowers and chocolates are not his idea of romance.  A good rule of thumb is that if it makes my heart go pitter patter, then it probably is not the thing to do for him.  When he has expressed his dislike for something stop doing it.
Example:  If you have an outfit you like and he has said, "Hmmm, it's not my favorite or that blue shirt reminds me of my grandma."  Probably, donate it to a charitable organization, or pass it on to your grandma, she'll probably love it.
Does he love a picked up house, swept floor, a made bed?  Well, then do those things.

Point # 2.    Be a GOOD student of your man.
I was blessed early on in my relationship with the Lord with this book, The 5 Love Languages.  This really helped me take a good look at myself, my husband and my kiddos.  It gives examples of the 5 languages that speak to all of us.  They are words of affirmation, gift giving, quality time, physical touch, and acts of service.  Knowing him helps to do the things he likes and staying away from the things he doesn't care for.  Since were focusing on intimacy you might want to find a time and dig deep for the courage to ask him what his dream lover looks like, than be that. (This idea was from the Intimate Issues conference by Linda Dillow)

Point #3. Be interested in the things he likes.
Being a good student means that you will know what he likes.  Now you can do something to really knock his socks off....know something about it and be the one to open up the discussion on the topic.  He will be surprised especially if it is an area that you have in the past expressed some disliking.

Point #4.     Be Impressed with him
Watch him and be impressed.  The older we get the less people rave about us.  You though can do this for your man.  When he does something that you are impressed with tell him.  Let him know you still admire him like you did in the beginning days of your relationship.  It never hurts to say how impressed you are with his strength!  You just watch he will beam.
Build him up in front of others.  If your impressed and it is in front of other people, don't miss the opportunity to say.  He will stand a little taller.
This is important, try not to override what he says. It makes them feel inadequate and it is embarrassing.  Our guys like to be needed.  I know you are a strong woman, but, be a damsel in distress sometimes.  Need him and let him help you.

Point #5.  Make yourself available
Be willing to just be in the same space as he is.  When he is doing a project be ready to lend a helping hand.  Also, here is a biggie.  If you are romancing your husband in such a way and he begins to draw near to you, then you need to be available for him.  I understand that sometimes it is more fun to draw the attention of him then when the time comes.....fear or some past ugliness comes up and you go into..."You can't touch this mode!"  This is so discouraging for all involved.  If you are struggling with past hurt, whether from him or some other thing, then you need to be open and honest about it with your husband and maybe need to get some help to get you through it.

Point #6. Most important …be his lover not his mother.
He has 1 mother and likely a mother-in-law and that is plenty.  A lot of us are moms all day long and it can be hard to turn it off, but you need to.  If you have trouble recognizing if you are doing that, ask a friend who you trust to tell you if they notice you treating your husband that way.
Your husband wants to be intimate with a woman who is confident and content.  This is an area that I think a lot of us woman struggle with.  The world sets up unrealistic standards and gives a false idea of intimacy.  In order to be that kind of a woman, we need to know what the truth about ourselves and what true romantic intimacy is to look like.  So we need to consult the one who created it.  God himself!  Song of Solomon is a great place to look.
There are other places to and the one other verse that I am going to take the time to address is 1 Corinthians 7:4.  Yikes, I know.  My husband has full authority over my body.  You want romance, give your husband what is his, if you haven't already.  Yes, I can hear all the reasons and excuses why we can't or shouldn't, heck, I wrote some of them, but in the end this is what I am told to do and so it must be what is best.  Once again,  I understand,  there may be some healing that has to take place, but you have to start somewhere.  Covering this area of your marriage in prayer is so important!  One wise prayer could be, "Lord, match up our desires."  The Lord is so faithful when we step out.

Romancing our husbands can seem strange.  It is not the way we would want to be romanced.  We are created differently.  It's really about being able to serve our husbands in a way that meets their needs and desires and usually in the mix God does an amazing thing and our needs and desires get met to.
Since the creation of time there has been a Romance story being written.  God the Creator of Romance wants us to be a part of it.  He has been pursuing a passionate, exciting, and fulfilling relationship with us.  He is the ultimate Knight and he has come to rescue us.  Are you in need of rescuing?  Is your marriage a mess or not what you have hoped for?  You can have a "Happily Ever After", when Christ is at the center of your story.

This adventure you and your husband are on will take time.  I just encourage you to take the 1st step, then take the next one.  It may be very hard at first, but the more you do it, the better it gets.

Here are a few practical ideas: (remember these are just ideas, your man might like something else)

The Out of Towner= “Don’t miss a thing journal”
My husband travels and so I write the things that happen down so he still feels connected and caught up when he gets home.  This way I am not bombarding him with a weeks worth of info. and most of the time, it ends up being a bit of a love letter to him.

Facebook flirting or texting
Just make sure it is the correct phone number if you text!

Lunchbox surprise
Notes are easy, but favorite candy or whatever he likes.

Workshirt love notes
Sneak a note in to the pocket of his pants or shirt to find later that day.

Valentines surprise week
Small surprises throughout the week and a finale on the 14th.  (start thinking now)

Do a chore for him.
Make the bed, iron shirts, make his lunch

Use SOS as a base line and write something about him and read it at bedtime.  (This may start out awkward and funny, but end fabulous.)

*When I say write him a note, I mean the kind he wants to read.  If you are a good student you will know what trips his trigger.  Also, notes that are a bit more passionate, I never used our names, just in case it gets dropped or someone else stumbles upon it by mistake before he finds it.  And of course they should always be God honoring!!!!

I am going...to bed soon.

I am wondering...if I will be as tired tomorrow.

I am reading...a bunch of cookbooks from the library.

I am hoping...my underline headache goes away.

I am looking forward to...women's studies starting again.

I am learning...to serve without complaining.

Around the house...laundry!

I am pondering...not much really.

A favorite quote for today..."All scripture is God breathed", when Paul wrote this he was speaking directly to the Old Testament.

One of my favorite things...is how good I feel after a good solid workout.

A few plans for the rest of the week: grading for 2nd quarter, unit 2 celebration projects, menu planning.

A peek into my day...clean up, laundry, library.

Romance after 18 years!!!!  I love this guy.
